Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add a new account?
You have two options:
- Scan a QR code. Go to the Scanner tab and point your camera at the QR code shown by the service you’re enabling 2FA on.
- Enter manually. Tap Add Manual on the Codes tab and paste the secret key the service gives you. Make sure the issuer and account name are correct.
My code isn’t working — what’s wrong?
Almost always one of two things:
- Device time is off. TOTP codes depend on your device clock matching real time. Open your phone’s settings and turn on automatic time / “Set automatically”.
- The wrong account. Make sure you’re using the code from the right entry — the issuer name should match the service you’re trying to log in to.
How do I move my accounts to a new phone?
Use the encrypted backup feature:
- On your old phone, open Settings → Backup.
- Set a backup email and a strong backup password.
- Tap Email Backup Now or Export to File.
- Install BD 2FA Authenticator on your new phone, set it up with a new PIN.
- Go to Settings → Backup Actions → Import Backup and select the
.bdtotpfile. - Enter the same backup password you used on the old phone.
Important: the backup password is the only thing that can decrypt the file. We have no copy and no way to recover it. Write it down somewhere safe.
I forgot my backup password.
We cannot recover it. Backups are encrypted with a key derived from your password using PBKDF2 (100,000 iterations). Without the password, the file cannot be decrypted by anyone — including us.
If you still have access to your accounts on your old device, export a fresh backup with a new password before you lose it.
I forgot my PIN.
For security reasons there is no PIN-recovery flow. After 5 wrong attempts the app locks for an increasing amount of time.
If you can no longer access the app, your only option is Settings → Delete All Data (visible from the lock screen on a fresh install) or uninstalling the app. You will lose all your accounts unless you have an encrypted backup file.
Does the app send my data anywhere?
No. The app runs entirely on your device. It does not have an account system, does not connect to our server, does not include analytics, and does not include advertising. When you create an encrypted backup, the file is sent through your own device’s mail composer or share sheet — we never receive it.
See the full privacy policy for details.
How do I delete my data?
Open Settings → Danger Zone → Delete All Data, type DELETE to confirm, and tap the button. This wipes every account, your PIN, and all settings from your device. It is permanent — there is no copy on any server because we don’t have a server.
You can also uninstall the app, which removes all its data automatically.
Is the app free?
Yes. BD 2FA Authenticator is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.
Which 2FA services does it work with?
Any service that uses standard TOTP (RFC 6238) — including Google, Microsoft, GitHub, Facebook, Twitter/X, Amazon, Dropbox, AWS, Cloudflare, Discord, and most others. If a service shows you a QR code or a secret key when setting up 2FA, BD 2FA Authenticator can use it.
